How is Pelvic Floor Therapy in-office different than going to a Physical Therapist?

·         The service in-office is provided by a Pelvic Floor Specialist who is under the supervision of a physician.
·         There are usually 3 visits for In-office PFT versus 8 to 14 often at a physical therapy facility.
·         Insurance often covers the visits when In-Office PFT because your doctor is billing for the service versus a physical therapy facility often requires cash payments.
·         Your Physician can track your progress and attendance.
·         Familiar surroundings. 
·         In-Office PFT often has 45 minutes to 1 hour one on one with the Pelvic Floor Specialist to review your pelvic floor issues and provide service.

How can Pelvic Floor Therapy help me?

Pelvic Floor Therapy (PFT), sometimes called Pelvic Muscle Rehab, has been around for many years. People often attempt to exercise the pelvic floor by performing "Kegel Exercises", but are performing them improperly, or most often, not following the right exercise prescription and therefore not making progress. It's no different than going to a gym to strengthen other muscles of your body but you have no idea how much to lift or how often. With the guidance of a PFT Specialist (think of them as a personal trainer for the pelvic floor) and hi-tech equipment PFT offers a clear, visual reinforcement of accuracy and effectiveness of the muscle exercise to obtain optimal results. It is recently becoming a more widely accepted treatment in the US as the AUA (American Urologic Association) now recommends PFT as the first step in treatment for Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (PFD).

What Will Happen at PFT?

At each appointment, evaluation sensors are placed in the vagina and our sophisticated instrumentation measures the force of pelvic muscle contractions to confirm the correct muscle is being contracted and determines the exact muscle fatigue point. The information allows the PFT Specialist to create an exercise regimen with specific muscle strengthening instructions that requires approximately five minutes per day to execute and does not require a device to be used to complete the exercises at home. A mild stimulus is also used to guide you in identifying the correct muscle, stimulate contractions of pelvic muscle tissue and electro stimulation of the pelvic floor nerve . PFT is NOT painful and is always adjusted to your specific comfort.

What Should I Expect?

At each appointment the PFT Specialist will remeasure the force of your contractions and use electrical stimulation to exercise the muscle. The average patient only needs 3 to 4 visits; each one only lasting about 40 minutes. Based on the information obtained during the initial evaluation, a comprehensive Plan Of Care is developed specifically for you which may include Bladder Retraining & Dietary Modifications. Patients should notice positive changes in symptoms in 3 to 4 weeks and significant changes in 3 to 6 months.

What is the Training for PFT Specialist?

Our Pelvic Floor Specialist go through an intense 'Internal Certification' program of approximately 300+ hours SPECIFICALLY on Pelvic Floor Disorders. It was created in conjunction with two nurse practitioners who are pioneers in PFT for over 20 years and train nationally and our clinical advisor who is a PA-C,MA,RN and Rehab Specialist for over 10 years. She designed, implemented and served as program director for a urinary and fecal incontinence program for an Internal medicine & Urology practice. She has also appeared on radio talk shows and served on advisory boards for PFT.
In addition to their training, PFT Specialist are under the supervision of a Physician. Our PFT Specialist are known for their compassion and vast knowledge in what they do.
